Freedom house Data gathering and publishing Methodology

Freedom house is an independent NGO which conducts surveys and also conducts research. It was founded in October 1941. Publishes survey detailing state of civil liberties political rights economic freedom . The survey analyzes and rates every country in the world.This organization was made for promoting peace and democracy around the world. It was established to support America when it was isolated at the time of World War 2. Freedom house conducted research and also conducted surveys only for promoting peace in the whole world Its founders included prominent journalists, businessman, labor leaders, former government officials etc. The early leader of this NGO was Wendell Willkie and Eleanor Roosevelt worked with him. George Field was the executive director of the organization and Bayard Rustin was the chairman of the executive committee. All board members are residents of United States. The office of the Freedom house is situated in the New York City building where they plan their programs and surveys. The building contains 19 rooms including broadcast facilities. Purpose: The first and foremost priority of The Freedom House was freedom and democracy as its name indicates. It becomes only possible because of a conducted research and conducted surveys because these are sources of gathering information .Freedom can only be attained in a democratic system where people can live freely and their fundamental rights of minorities and women are guaranteed. They work against dictatorship and oppression's. They favor the people who are struggling for freedom and their fundamental rights.conducting research can be helpful in many ways info is being gathered by observing the whole world situation and according to their needs.

In 1947, Freedom House insisted the New York Governor to establish a university in which students from any race, color or place can study. This organization basically promoted equality for all. It worked for the civil rights of a human. Afterwards during the 1970, Freedom House emerged in other parts of the world like in Asia, Africa, Middle East and Latin America. After the fall of Soviet Union, Freedom House started training young leaders for freedom and democracy.

In 1997, it merged with National Forum Foundation and enhanced freedom house capacity to conduct survey in fledgling democracies. Freedom House also supported newly democratic countries in establishing strong institutions of governance. In 2000, Freedom House played an active role in overthrowing the government of Milosevic by turning the people of Serbia against him. It established its offices in the most difficult parts of the world. After 9/11 attack, Freedom House has taken more active role in Middle East and Central Asia. It continued to conduct surveys all around the world for freedom, civil liberties and democracy. The organization has conducted research on various aspects of freedom and did many surveys like Freedom of the Press survey, Nations in Transit, Countries at the Crossroads surveys etc. It has also done analysis and conducted research on gender inequality. Reports: The three main reports and surveys of Freedom House are: 1. Freedom In the World: Freedom House publishes an annual report named Freedom in the World, an annual survey of global political rights and civil liberties . In its 2003 report, Canada got a perfect score in civil liberties and political rights while North Korea scored the lowest rank. These analyses are done in a very accurate and systematic way by experts, journalists and political scientists. 2. Freedom in the Press: Freedom of Press is an annual survey of media to see the degree of broadcast and social media freedom throughout the world. It rates each countries media as Free, Partly Free or Not Free.According to a conducted survey, Countries scoring 0 to 30 are considered as having free media; 31 to 60, Partly Media and 61 to 100, Not Free Media. Out of the 195 countries assessed, 89 were rated free, 55 Partly Free and 51 Not Free.

It classified Saudi Arabia and Chile as Not Free. The report gives a complete picture of how media is operated in a particular country. 3. Freedom on the Net: This survey provides numerical rating of the internet freedom of the countries all over the world. It deals with filtering and blocking of websites, censorship, legal restrictions on online activities and limits on privacy etc. Freedom House has produced 85 special reports since 2002. In addition to these reports, Freedom House also participates in advocacy initiatives and religious freedom. It promotes local human rights workers and NGOS. It makes sure that its methodology is systematic and not culturally biased. Their view of freedom is not culture bound. Freedom House was criticized by Cuban, Sudanese, China and Russia. Russia said Freedom House as Not Free. They called it biased for serving the U.S interests only. Funding: According to its 2007 Annual conducted survey, Freedom House receives 66 percent of its funding from the United States Federal Government. Freedom House is a member of International Freedom of Expression Exchange which is a global network of 80 NGOS Today, it has more than 120 experts and its offices are in almost 12 countries like Washington, New York, Ukraine, Hungary, Serbia, Jordan, Mexico, and also countries in Central Asia.According to a conducted research Freedom in the World is produced each year by a team of in-house and external analyst and expert.Freedom house main methodology in whole world is because of conducting surveys and their method of conducting research.
